BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY

Breast augmentation surgery may be chosen for both functional and aesthetic reasons. This type of plastic surgery may be suitable if you are looking to increase the volume and fullness of your breasts.

What is Breast
Augmentation Surgery?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to enlarge or enhance the breasts using implants.

Today there are many different types of breast implants available. Depending upon your individual circumstances, the implants may be placed behind your breast or beneath your pectoral muscles.

This surgery may be used to increase breast size or improve loss of support and shape due to age-related changes. It may also be beneficial for post-implantation descent or capsule formation that has resulted in distortion or loss of shape.

How it Works

1. REFERRAL

We require a GP referral for all surgical procedures. Please book in with your GP to discuss and obtain a referral.

2.CONSULTATION

After referral, you will have two consultations with our team prior to booking in your procedure. The first consultation will be with the surgeon who will be performing your procedure and will be in-person – this is a great time to discuss the specifics of your situation, the outcomes you are hoping to achieve, your personal health and lifestyle concerns and attributes, along with all possible treatment options, the recovery process and any risks involved. Your second consultation may be with your surgeon again, or could be with another of our team who is qualified to consult on your treatment. At least one consultation must be in-person at one of our practices.

The size and shape of your breasts before surgery may influence the choice of which surgical procedure is best for you. This will all be explained simply and clearly during your first consultation.

After your two consultation appointments, you can provide signed consent for the decided upon treatment and your procedure will be booked in. There is a 7 day cooling off period from the day of your signed consent.

If you are under the age of 18 years, please contact us directly to discuss your consultation process as it will differ to the process for adult patients.

3. THE PROCEDURE

Your breast augmentation surgery will be undertaken by Plastic Surgery Queensland in a hospital. An incision directly under the breast is the technique usually used for breast enlargement surgery. This is because the breast implant can be positioned most accurately into its pocket.

The breast implant itself may be placed under the pectoralis muscle, under the breast tissue or a combination of both in the ‘dual plane’ technique.

4. POST
PROCEDURE
CARE

Swelling and soreness are common after surgery. An overnight hospital stay is recommended to ensure close monitoring by medical staff. A garment is fitted and that will stay in place until your post-operative appointment 7 days after your surgery.

A fitted bra is recommended to wear for 6 weeks.

A strict post operative regime is required when undertaking Breast Augmentation surgery. Exercise and heavy lifting is limited in the 4-6 weeks post procedure. Driving is also not recommended for the first few weeks.

Post Operative Appointments are offered at the practice where you had your initial consultations.

RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS

Potential risks associated with the procedure comprise bleeding and infection (<5%).

Should significant bleeding occur, it may require a return to the operating room for necessary repair. Conversely, an infection within the implant may require the removal of the implant for a four-month duration before considering a subsequent procedure.

Additional important considerations:

You should expect to observe a scar after the surgery, although it typically fades over time.
The implant will naturally develop a capsule around it, which might require adjustment. In most patients, this occurs over a span of 5-10 years, although individual cases may vary.

There is also a rare complication known as ALCL (anaplastic large cell lymphoma) associated with textured implant usage, both in Australia and globally. This condition typically becomes apparent over 8-10 years. It's important to note that ALCL is not breast cancer but rather an immune cancer linked to the formation of a capsule around the implant. The estimated risk of developing ALCL is between 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 50,000. This condition will be thoroughly discussed during your consultation.

FAQs

If you are fit, healthy and capable of undergoing a general anaesthetic, this surgery may be suitable for you. Our experienced team will work with you to understand your unique goals and needs to ensure this surgery is suitable for you.

For those women seeking a more subtle boost in their breast size, an alternative option to consider is "autologous breast augmentation." This approach harnesses your body's own fat cells to elevate your breast tissue. By utilising liposuction to extract fat from different areas of your body, we can create the desired enhancement. This procedure is also commonly referred to as "fat transfer breast augmentation."

In the past, implants may be replacing after 10 years. We are now we are seeing greater longevity in implants over time.

The ideal preparation is to stay fit and healthy by maintaining a good diet, with good sleep, minimising alcohol intake and not smoking.

We believe in finding the best treatment option to match a patient’s requirements and their financial circumstances. Please make an appointment to discuss costs in detail.

There are many low-cost options both in Australia and overseas and great care should be taken when dealing with a surgeon who is not an ASPS / AHPRA / FRACS recognised Plastic Surgeon. Unfortunately, many patients confuse plastic surgeons with cosmetic surgeons (as recently mentioned in the ABC Four Corners report) and the training varies significantly.

Always ask your surgeon about their experience. We recommend that you ensure your plastic surgeon has undertaken over 12 years of post-medical specialist training. It’s also recommended to always seek second opinions if you have concerns. Ultimately you should feel comfortable with the surgeon you are seeing.
