FOUR LOCATIONS ONE EXPERIENCED TEAM

RHINOPLASTY SURGERY

Rhinoplasty Surgery, commonly known as a 'nose job', addresses both cosmetic and functional concerns by reshaping nasal bone and cartilage. This dual-purpose surgery enhances facial harmony while improving breathing difficulties caused by structural abnormalities or previous trauma.

What is Rhinoplasty
Surgery?

This versatile procedure can be performed for purely aesthetic reasons to enhance facial balance and proportion, or for functional purposes to correct breathing problems caused by structural abnormalities such as a deviated septum. Modern rhinoplasty techniques allow surgeons to make precise adjustments to the nasal structure while maintaining natural-looking results that complement your unique facial features.

The surgery involves carefully reshaping the bone, cartilage, and soft tissue of the nose through either an open or closed approach. Recovery typically involves temporary swelling and bruising, with final results becoming apparent over several months as the nose settles into its new shape. When performed by experienced plastic surgeons, rhinoplasty can dramatically improve both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the nose.

How it Works

1. REFERRAL

We require a GP referral for all surgical procedures. Please book in with your GP to discuss and obtain a referral.

2.CONSULTATION

After referral, you will have two consultations with our team prior to booking in your procedure. The first consultation will be with the surgeon who will be performing your procedure and will be in-person – this is a great time to discuss the specifics of your situation, the outcomes you are hoping to achieve, your personal health and lifestyle concerns and attributes, along with all possible treatment options, the recovery process and any risks involved. Your second consultation may be with your surgeon again, or could be with another of our team who is qualified to consult on your treatment. At least one consultation must be in-person at one of our practices.

After your two consultation appointments, you can provide signed consent for the decided upon treatment and your procedure will be booked in. There is a 7 day cooling off period from the day of your signed consent.

If you are under the age of 18 years, please contact us directly to discuss your consultation process as it will differ to the process for adult patients.

3. THE PROCEDURE

Your rhinoplasty surgery will be undertaken by Plastic Surgery Queensland in a hospital, using either open or closed surgical techniques based on your specific needs.

4. POST
PROCEDURE

Following your rhinoplasty procedure, nasal breathing may be temporarily compromised for approximately six weeks as your tissues heal and swelling naturally subsides. Your transformation will begin to emerge once the protective nasal splint is removed between days 7-10, revealing the initial results of your surgery.

Bruising typically resolves within the first two weeks, while the majority of swelling diminishes over the following two months. Complete healing is a gradual process—residual swelling may persist for up to a full year, which is entirely normal given the intricate anatomy of nasal structures. Embracing patience during your recovery journey is crucial for optimal outcomes.

Your nasal bridge requires dedicated healing time, so we recommend avoiding glasses and sunglasses for 4-6 weeks post-procedure. For patients who previously struggled with nasal obstruction, you'll likely notice significantly improved airflow as the post-surgical swelling resolves in the weeks following your procedure.

RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS

Every surgical procedure, whether cosmetic or reconstructive, carries inherent risks that patients should thoroughly understand before making their decision. Being well-informed about these possibilities is essential for setting realistic expectations and ensuring you're comfortable proceeding.

Potential rhinoplasty complications may include:

• Anesthetic-related adverse reactions
• Altered sensation in treated areas
• Suboptimal scar formation
• Delayed or compromised healing
• Post-surgical infection
• Temporary or persistent breathing difficulties
• Skin pigmentation changes
• Prolonged swelling and bruising
• Development of new asymmetries
• Continuation of pre-existing asymmetries
• Diminished nasal tip sensitivity
• Restricted nasal airway function
• Partial or complete loss of smell (anosmia)
• Tissue death (necrosis)
• Temporary lip numbness
• Nasal septum perforation

While these complications are possible, they remain relatively uncommon when performed by experienced, board-certified surgeons using proper techniques and protocols. During your consultation, we'll discuss your individual risk factors and address any specific concerns you may have about your procedure.

FAQs

Initial recovery typically takes 1-2 weeks, with most swelling subsiding within 6-8 weeks. However, final results may take up to a year to fully develop as the nose continues to refine and settle.

When performed correctly, rhinoplasty should not negatively impact breathing. In many cases, functional rhinoplasty can actually improve breathing by correcting structural issues like a deviated septum.

Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions inside the nose with no external scarring, while open rhinoplasty includes a small incision across the columella (the tissue between nostrils) for better surgical access and precision.

We believe in finding the best treatment option to match a patient's requirements and their financial circumstances. Please make an appointment to discuss costs in detail with our experienced team.

When rhinoplasty addresses functional concerns like breathing difficulties or corrects structural damage from injury, Medicare may provide partial coverage. Patients should verify their eligibility against Medicare guidelines and may need specialist referral documentation prior to scheduling their initial consultation

There are many low-cost options both in Australia and overseas and great care should be taken when dealing with a surgeon who is not an ASPS / AHPRA / FRACS recognised Plastic Surgeon. Unfortunately, many patients confuse plastic surgeons with cosmetic surgeons (as recently mentioned in the ABC Four Corners report) and the training varies significantly.

Most patients can return to desk work within 7-10 days, though you may have some residual swelling and bruising. Physical activities and exercise should be avoided for 4-6 weeks post-surgery.

With closed rhinoplasty, there are no external scars. Open rhinoplasty results in a small scar across the columella that typically heals very well and becomes barely visible over time.
